UPDATED Friday, March 27: Salem Health no longer needs help making masks; all kits already picked up

Salem Health is asking for help making masks for its nurses and other care providers amid a supply shortage brought on by the coronavirus outbreak.

The health care provider, which has hospitals in Salem and Dallas, is distributing kits to make nearly 10,000 masks.

Here’s what you should know about the effort:

  • People who want to help need a sewing machine, white thread, scissors or a rotary cutter, and a yardstick, straight edge or cutting mat. Volunteers shouldn’t use their own fabric. Video instructions can be found online.

  • The kits include instructions, surgical paper fabric and a bag for the completed mask.

  • Helpers can pick up kits at locations in Salem (a security booth at Mission Street SE and 25th Street SE) and Dallas (West Valley Hospital parking lot, 525 S.E. Washington St.)

  • Pickup times are Thursday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

  • Masks can be dropped off at the same locations on dates listed online.
