via Oregon State Legislature: SB1567 2020 Regular Session (Police Arbitration)

In Oregon and across the country, calls for police reform must be heard.

As Rep. Janelle Bynum, a member of the Oregon Legislative People of Color (POC) Caucus said this week, “Now is the time for everyone to come to the table to make swift and meaningful public safety reforms.” I support the POC Caucus recommendations for stricter police accountability measures.

A bill that had been passed by the Senate but left on the table in the House during the 2020 session (SB 1567), has broad support. Governor Brown is being called upon by legislators to convene a special session within 30 days to discuss police accountability legislation.

SB 1567 would prohibit an arbitrator from lessening disciplinary action against a law enforcement officer if the arbitrator and the law enforcement agency determine that the officer has committed misconduct. This is just the start of the work we must do to make policing more just in Oregon and across the nation.
