Kindred Spirits
In his 2008 book, Moyers on Democracy," Bill Moyers writes that "the story that becomes America's dominant narrative will shape our collective imagination and our politics for a long time to come." We can see that this is true, as the shadows of fear and division lengthen across our land.
Yet, there is much that can be done to address this challenge. I agree with Moyer, who continues, "kindred spirits across the nation must confront...the failure to embrace a moral vision of America based on the transcendent faith that human beings are more than the sum of their material appetites, our country is more than an economic machine and freedom is not license, but responsibility--the gift we have received and the legacy we must bequeath."
This is why I am working hard with kindred spirits in the legislature, and with you, kindred spirits in our district and beyond, to ensure that we have affordable healthcare, childcare and housing, good schools and access to higher education and job training, healthy food that people can afford, living wage jobs, and comfortable retirements for all older adults. In short, enough for all, and dignity for all. We have the freedom to act responsibly - for an Oregon that works for everyone.
